ABSTRACT

The power of the mind seems to have always been recognized in the professions that are concerned with wellness. The medical community seeks to harness this force with the use of placebos. Interventions such as hypnosis offer undisputed examples of the power of the mind. Hypnotic suggestions have been used to modify behavior and manage pain. A psychotherapist may realize that there are times where an unconscious technique may result in greater improvement to overall health than a psychological intervention that consciously seeks to educate and heighten one’s awareness of cause and effect. Biofeedback is a therapeutic modality that gives clinical feedback on such bodily responses as skin temperature, muscle activity, and brain waves. The physical body is a symphony of systems working in orchestration to achieve balance and health. The immune system monitors the internal state of the body and detects unwanted cells and toxins that potentially disrupt the body’s balance.
