ABSTRACT

While the role of the chaplain and the practice of hospital ministry would be recognizable in the twenty-first century, just as it was recognizable 150 years ago, some things have changed. It is not possible to describe all of the professional needs a person is likely to encounter in the practice of hospital ministry. To some degree, each setting and individual must shape his or her own ministry style and focus. This chapter uses a holistic model is used to provide an integrative look at some of the professional needs of hospital ministry personnel. Throughout, the reader will find first-person experiences of first-time students, mature clergy, supervisors, and chaplains. In all cases, specific experiences may be adapted with portions omitted for the purpose of focusing on the area at hand. Vignettes and experiences not quoted are composite material gathered together by the author and represent no one person or situation.
