ABSTRACT

The term Caribbean generally refers to the eastern and southern West Indies, a large group of islands located south and southeast of the mainland of the United States. This region includes islands such as Jamaica, Haiti, Dominican Republic, the Bahamas Islands, Trinidad, and even the Virgin Islands. The roles of Caribbean women are most often are described, However, their place in society transcends the home and plays a large part in the structure of the working class. Our analysis of the survey results indicated that traditional power attributes were not personally popular with these Caribbean-American women, whereas a majority of the women agreed that society uses most of these attributes. The few traditional power attributes that did resonate with them were resources, authority, struggle, and competition. Reciprocal empowerment, personal authority, and empowerment fared better with this group, with the majority agreeing with all of the reciprocal empowerment and personal authority statements and with three of the five empowerment statements.
