ABSTRACT

The Latin American population in the South Florida conducted a study which is significant and diverse, ranging from Mexicans and Guatemalans to Colombians and Brazilians. Results of the survey indicate that the Latin American women who participated over whelmingly agreed with the reciprocal empowerment statements, with its combination of personal authority and empowerment attributes. These women agreed with all the personal authority statements, but empowerment statements on their own did not receive as much agreement. Regarding both work and family, a large number of the women saw traditional power attributes being utilized. This evidently was incongruent with their ideas of about how and what kind of power should be used. Here, attributes clearly associated with the four perspectives of power were barely evidenced. Decision making was clearly in the lead as an attribute of choice for the women, particularly in how it relates to the use of power in the family.
