Music is a universal language, and it has always flourished in popular culture. The focus of the multibillion-dollar music industry has switched from composition to engineering. Virtual reality has reached out from the screen and taken over the very lucrative music business. Punk rock and heavy metal featured the body-music ethos, and tended to make pop music into a weapon of social assault. Many now try to reproduce the look and style of video clips, including lip-synching music already canned So who is singing what? The music of the young, changing with lightning speed, has become not only the mirror but the triumph of our children—and the despair of many of their parents. All the diminished the value of live musical performances, which tended to emulate the mechanized sonic perfection of records.
