ABSTRACT

This chapter attempts to explore links that illuminate our journey, such as myths and dreams, East and West. We encountered popular culture by peering into the dark museum home of Oetzi the Iceman, who died some 5,300 years ago in the Alpine glaciers; then into ancient caves, where pictures of giant animals skillfully depicted the struggle for survival. What are the parameters of popular culture, and how are they changing in the Information Age? Oetzi, the best-preserved Bronze Age man ever found, was discovered in the 1990s in the high Dolomite Mountains. We wondered what sort of people our primitive ancestors were, as they moved from caves to tombs to forums to castles to cities. Alpha and Omega—the beginning and the end of our journey takes us back thousands of years to the dim primordial past.
