ABSTRACT
Much has been written of Haussmann’s remaking of urban space in Paris during the second half of the 19th century (Jones 2004; Hussey 2010; Harvey 2006). The Haussmann Plan included improvements in sanitation, communications, and the rail network, and made a significant contribution to the aesthetics of the built environment, which remain popular today, but its essential concern was to create modern public space, space designed to facilitate and control everyday and spectacular urban mobility.
