      ABSTRACT

These three ways of becorning a bourbon faneier correspond to ways In which one can become a member of a social movement. The third alternative, "seeing the light," is the lOad to membership most peculiar to social movements-the one least shared with other types of groups. This

chapter will focus on this process, which some people have called "conversion." The other two roads to membership, early indoctrination ("being born lucky") and socialization ("working one's way up") will be briefly reviewed by way of introduction.
