ABSTRACT

The political use of writing is a relatively recent phenomenon among the Roma. It is interconnected with the formation of an international Romani intelligentsia and the rise of Romani political organisations. The first evidence of political mobilisation among the Roma can be traced back to Eastern Europe at the beginning of the twentieth century. At that time there was no coordinated Romani political movement as such. Over the past few decades, however, the field of Romani politics has gradually evolved into a global phenomenon.
