ABSTRACT

There has been much discussion over the past 30 years about the secularization of society and the decline of religious influence, belief, and participation in America. Recall that Freud predicted such a decline almost three-quarters of a century ago. As scientific progress has occurred, have we become more rational and emotionally stable, and have we achieved greater control over our destiny? Are persons today more able to cope with their problems through rational means, without the aid of religious beliefs and practices, which, as Freud, Ellis, and Watters have suggested, breed emotional instability and neurosis?
