ABSTRACT
José first worked at the Black Cat Cafe as a substitute for Jimmy when Jimmy could not make it to work because he was sick or, more often, because he was drunk. José found himself enjoying the patrons as much as they enjoyed him. He would serve drinks, flirt with and tease everyone, and he would sing. Revelers began coming to the Cat just to see José. Sol Stoumen noticed the business increasing at his establishment, and he offered José a steady job.
