ABSTRACT

In 1897, Doctor Magnus Hirschfeld, a German researcher in Berlin, established the Scientific-Humanitarian Committee, the first known gay rights organization, with three primary goals: normalizing society's understanding of sexuality, particularly homosexuality; motivating gay people to fight for equality; and rescinding Germany's antigay laws. During the first decades of the twentieth century the gay rights movement in Germany experienced substantial success, and gay people began to find more acceptance in the culture.
