ABSTRACT
My very first exposure to José was on television, watching the documentary Before Stonewall on Channel 6, Sacramento's PBS station. I had not been out of the closet for very long, and I knew very little about gay and lesbian history. I watched with fascination a man from my parent's generation who had been out of the closet before I was born. That documentary sparked my interest in gay history and my desire to discover a heritage I never knew I had. What was for José a retrospective of his life, for me was a beginning.
