ABSTRACT

War is a force that displaces people, uproots them and sends them off to places they would not otherwise have considered living. Sometimes people migrate as refugees of war, as Maria Dolores did. Sometimes, however, people simply follow the economic spoils of war, the jobs created out of wartime necessity or those jobs abandoned by the men and women who left to fight the war more directly. Such was the case with José's adopted family during World War I.
