ABSTRACT

Interest in the link between trade and the environment has grown quickly during recent years and the literature on the subject is expanding rapidly. The character of environmental values was discussed in Chapter 1; this chapter will present a short summary of the economic perspective of trade. We then focus on the connection between trade and the environment. The environment's international aspects are examined and possible ways of handling problems through harmonization and international cooperation are considered. The chapter further discusses the usefulness of trade barriers as an instrument for handling environmental issues, the localization of activities which damage the environment, and the political factors which might contribute to difficulties in this field.
