ABSTRACT
There is a widespread misconception that free trade is desirable. It is not unusual that the GATT (General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade) is referred to as a ‘free trade agreement’ and the EU is referred to as a ‘free trade zone’. These expressions imply that there would be no restrictions whatsoever on trade; trade would not be regulated at all.
