ABSTRACT
Serena grew up as a rather uninhibited baby. She had the model of her mother in mind, Delia, but she was not there to demonstrate it or to protect her from social blame. Even though, conventionally, childrearing was supposed to totally absorb a woman's life energy, for serena, her baby's birth was an incentive to desire and do more-study, work, find her own centeredness, give her life a meaning of its own.
