ABSTRACT

In the process of preparing this chapter it became clear that it would hardly serve scholarly purposes to publish only the unknown or lesser known German documents and in the course to ignore the greater historical context in which they were created. The selection offered includes letters of Sir Roger Casement written in most cases to diplomats and functionaries of the German Foreign Office, and letters written to Irish or American contemporaries. A good number of the documents contain enlightening references and information related to developments otherwise not commonly associated with the Easter Rising. Anti-British co-operation between German-Americans and Irish-Americans long before World War I and the multi-faceted German interventions in Irish matters during World War II could be cited as examples. The archives contain a few appraisals, such as those from Evelyn Princess Blucher. The documents have been numbered to allow the creation of a Calendar of Documents designed to assist reader and researcher alike.
