ABSTRACT

For Islamic movements to contribute to positive and progressive social change, they must address certain issues, among them the ends and means of political power, the status of women and non-Muslim minorities, and the creative reform and application of Islamic laws to modern contexts. In this article, presented at the Islamic Youth Movement of Malaysia (ABIM) conference on Islam and Social Change in 1996, I discuss five ways in which Islamic movements can promote social change within their own nations and in the international system.
