ABSTRACT

This chapter broadens the discussion to some models in the world such as the East Asian development model, the Soviet model, the European social democracy model, and some three emerging powers commonly included in the so-called BRIC, namely Brazil, Russia, and India. Japan's earlier rise and China's current ascent are part of the same historical story of East Asia's resurgence. Brazil, a country of almost 200 million, now has a $1.3 trillion economy, which makes it larger than India and Russia, and its per capita Gross domestic product is twice as high as China's. For students of international political economy, Latin America was used in 1980s as a contrast to far more vibrant economic growth in East Asia. As the trendsetter for the modern Asian political economy, Japan's development model became the basis of East Asian development model, defined as a state-led, export-oriented model. The non-Western regions are bound to become more important and to enter the Chinese intellectual discourse.
