Many of the theorists cited in this article were teachers in these institutions. It was only in 1975 that a master’s programme in the science and techniques of accounting and finance, leading to a degree in public accounting, was created and offered at a small number of French universities. Thus official university recog­ nition of accounting as an academic discipline came very late in France, which could explain the belated arrival of theoretical writing and research in the field.
