ABSTRACT

In Bosnia-hercegovina (BiH), denial is a critical source of inter-ethnic mistrust and resentment, and hence a major hindrance to reconciliation. Turning to the aforementioned camps, during the war in BiH all sides established camps in which they detained, mistreated and killed members of other ethnic groups. As will be seen, denial regarding the purpose and function of these camps is not confined to Bosnian Serbs. If Bosnian Serb interviewees repeatedly argued that the vast majority of those killed in Srebrenica were combatants, some, and in particular those interviewed in 2013, additionally asserted that many of the dead who are buried in the Potocari Memorial Centre near Srebrenica were in fact killed in 1992 and 1993 during attacks on Serb villages in the area. Throughout BiH, Bosnian Muslim interviewees fully conceded that Serb soldiers were killed during the war, but they were far less willing to acknowledge civilian deaths.
