ABSTRACT

China’s elite sport developed rapidly in the last two decades of the twentieth century. In the new atmosphere of economic reform sport received unprecedented support from both government and society. Guided by the Olympic Strategy the sport system produced many elite athletes. China’s ultimate goal was to win medals at the Olympics to benefit China’s international image and to support the revival of the Chinese nation. 1 There has been a question of how China managed to become a sports superpower against the American and the Russians in such a short time. The secret lay in its unique elite sports system called ‘Juguo Tizhi’ in Chinese and ‘the whole country supports the elite sport’ in English.
