ABSTRACT
From the standpoint of these equivocal times the headmasters of the late Victorian and Edwardian public schools are perhaps to be envied. They saw with clarity and spoke with conviction. Certainty subdued modesty. If they were to be believed, the products of their schools, almost to a boy, were muscular, moral and manly.
