ABSTRACT

In one of the first of a remarkable string of Australian international sporting successes, Don Bradman's ‘invincibles’ won the 1948 Ashes cricket test series in England 4–0. During the final test, a non-cricket fan wrote to English captain Norman Yardley:

Dear Mr Yardley, I have no interest whatever in cricket and do not care who wins. But the other day, quite by accident, I listened for a few moments to a Test match broadcaster. He said that something or someone called Lindwall was bowling. It sounded a peculiar name to me, but when the commentator proceeded to say that this bowler had two long legs, one fine short leg and a square leg, I was shocked. Tell me, Mr Yardley, what kind of creatures are these Australian cricketers? No wonder we can't win. 1
