Early in the morning of 27 September 1983, some six million Australians gathered around TV sets to watch two 12 metre yachts battle out the final of a seven-race match series for the America's Cup. To the booming pop sounds of Men at Work's song ‘Down Under’, and beneath multitudes of green and gold boxing kangaroo flags, Australia II beat the American defender Liberty 83. 1
