ABSTRACT

Participation in athletic programs enables children and young adults to develop a wide range of skills. Moreover, it provides opportunities to develop trans-racial friendships, for entertainment, to cultivate belonging, and learn how to negotiate relationships while achieving shared goals. A staple in the U.S. economy, the sports industry generates millions of dollars in revenue in cities and states. For example, Super Bowl XLV alone was estimated to bring in between $200 and $300 million revenue to the North Dallas area (McCarthy 2011).
