ABSTRACT

Unaided communication refers to techniques that utilize body parts and movements, usually the arms and hands (e.g., gestures and sign sys tems). Unaided communication can be either the primary mode or a sup plemental technique of an augmentative communication system. Aided communication refers to techniques that utilize a physical object or de vice (e.g., manual board, electronic device). Current practice in the se lection of an augmentative communication system emphasizes use of sev eral augmentative techniques with a given individual to provide a means of communication in as many settings as possible, with and without equipment. Such a system may include an electronic device, a manual board, and a gesture/sign system.
