ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights the major outcomes launched at Rio+20 that complement, and to a certain extent put in perspective, the official text and limitations of the agreements contained in 'The Future We Want'. Rio+20 mobilized all kinds of actors into delivering concrete practical results. The second innovation after the Dialogue Days was the introduction of a Registry of Voluntary Commitments. The registry was intended to be a platform of voluntary commitments by all governmental and non-governmental stakeholders, aimed at poverty eradication and sustainable development. The addition of voluntary commitments made by all stakeholders to the sustainable development agenda was an interesting and beneficial mechanism that could secure a new level of consideration and action by stakeholders. The Natural Resources Defense Council noted that, over the years, although many commitments had been made in multilateral fora, there was no 'universal mechanism for recording these pledges and tracking their progress'.
