ABSTRACT

Most people, at least among the better educated, are aware that they often fail to understand personality adequately, and tend to think that there are deeper motives which could be fathomed if they had greater insight. The parents of a problem child tell their doctor or the probation officer that they have tried every method of controlling Johnny and failed; and nowadays there is a growing willingness to consult the professionally trained psychiatrist or the psychologist at the Child Guidance Clinic. It seems fairly obvious to us, again, that the obsessional hand-washer or pyromaniac, or the soldier who develops a paralysis following the stress of battle without having received any physical injury, are suffering from deep-down mental difficulties.
