ABSTRACT

Our object here is to review a few investigations carried out in the UK which are: (a) fairly recent; (b) large-scale; (c) very thoroughly conducted, and which (d) attempt to bring out the influence of several contributory factors, not merely to report overall correlations between parental job level, or family size, etc. and abilities. A valuable study was made by E. Fraser of a representative sample of 408 12-year-olds in Aberdeen secondary schools, where a large amount of home data was collected by interview and correlated with IQ and a measure of school progress.
