ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the meaning structure of sensory-motor ideas. It is possible to show how a number of sensory-motor structures in speech are ultimately based on the idea of an Event, and utterances tend to be organized around the concept of an Event. Sensory-motor ideas which can be derived from the definition of a real- world event are States and Actions. It has been noted that the so-called action verbs and the process verbs, by themselves, convey Events. The chapter attempts to characterize the ideas of Entity and Person in terms of psychological representations, considering Entity first. An Event Property is conceived of as a condition on the occurrence of a real- world event. Such real-world conditions are usually conveyed by adverbs. Sensory-motor ideas that refer to the conditions on the occurrence of events are Event Properties, and those that refer to conditions on the existence of entities or persons are Entity or Person Properties.
