ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at an example of Chomsky's approach in action. It looks at the Binding Principle also has implications for other areas of grammar, which look on the surface quite different from the areas. The Binding Principle runs into a problem when we try to apply it to Japanese. The chapter shows an example of Move-alpha, the passive sentences at the beginning. In an influential study Nina Hyams presents evidence that setting the parameters of Universal grammar (UG) plays a crucial part in language acquisition. The chapter looks at one example of Chomsky's approach in action and also looks at some English sentences and saw how Chomsky proposes to account for some of their properties with the Binding Principle, which he claims is innate, part of UG. Finally the chapter looks at some research into language acquisition by real children to see whether the Binding Principle receives support.
