Myths and Misconceptions About Research book
Bercovitz (1986) notes that research can have “tremendous value and it can also be nearsighted, overestimated, abused, or misused … and too frequently misunderstood or undervalued” (p. 414). Th is book is an attempt to understand some of the terms used in research. It is a small start toward helping to not only avoid misunderstanding but to emphasize the value of research when it is conducted rigorously and thoughtfully. Th e ideas in this fi nal chapter add to that attempt-they have been collected
from students, faculty, and the literature. Although they may seem rather random, these are ideas that arise frequently and play a central role in much research. Again, we include the caveat that there is more than one perspective on each of these ideas that the researcher can consider.
