ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of the book. The book explores how sustainability-focused leadership roles and functions align with and advance the leadership concepts and ideals embraced nationally as central to effective instructional leadership that positively influences student learning and achievement. It also explores these leadership concepts and ideals within a 21st-century school context, exploring which expectations and indicators might necessitate more emphasis in light of today's challenges and tomorrow's needs. The book tells the story of green school leaders like Tom and Angela, as well as other superintendents, principals, teachers, and students who are leading according to continuously developing educational leadership policy and standards in ways that reduce the environmental impact of school buildings and engage students in purposeful, meaningful learning for a sustainable future.
