ABSTRACT

This chapter enlists upcoming generations in the creation and preservation of convivial places - places where human diversity and species diversity can coexist, where future generations of children can find good reason to feel attached. Key concepts in the literature on people-place relationships include a sense of place, defined as the experiential process created by the setting itself in combination with what a person brings to it. Place identity connotes those dimensions of self that develop in relation to the physical environment. Community recognizes and fosters notions of neighborliness, cooperation, and mutual support. Green school leaders are wise to communicate the value-added their community will derive from creating greener, more sustainable schools, welcoming interested members into a two-way dialogue about the opportunities inherent in such an educational program.
