By the end of the fifteenth century, the center of international com­ merce had moved from the Mediterranean to Western Europe. Spain, Portugal, and later Holland became the focal points of international commercial activity. The more developed areas of Europe were changing from a subsistence economy to one relying heavily on im­ ports paid by money or letters of credit.
