ABSTRACT
Sitting on a plane flying from Hawaii to New York in the summer of 1978, the seeds for my first book were planted. Next to me sat Selma Jeanne Cohen, noted dance historian, who had written The Modern Dance: Seven Statements of Belief. We were returning from a conference of the Congress on Research in Dance (CORD), where I had just delivered my first paper entitled, “The Stigma of Women in Dance.” Initially I had written it as a final project for Selma Jeanne when I studied with her at the University of Chicago during the summer of 1976.
