ABSTRACT

All the projects designed by West 8 address the issue of memory in some way: for some projects it lies hidden behind the surface and is not an obvious concern; in other works memory is a central factor—either in terms of how we frame the project or in the sources that influence our thinking. It’s important to emphasize that having been born in the Netherlands, I have lived with environmental and social conditions that differ radically from those of other countries [7–1]. To begin with, I was born three meters below sea level, a condition which has to have affected my perspective on the landscape and my ideas about how it should be created, designed, and managed.
