ABSTRACT

Between the declaration of the Republic in November 1918 and the appointment of Hitler in January 1933 there were altogether 12 Chancellors, who managed between them to assemble 21 different cabinets. Over the same period, by contrast, there were two Presidents: the SPD leader Ebert, from 1919 until 1925, and Hindenburg, not attached to a party, who was elected in 1925 and re-elected in 1932.
