      ABSTRACT

The spatial and temporalizing distortions of différance in the themed environment – the spacing out (differentiating) and timing out (deferring) of architectural and environmental signs – are rooted in the industrial work manager’s strategy of labor and leisure-time organization. To better understand how the abstract process of semiotic signification is transferred to a spatial practice concerned with the making-work of leisure, it is worth teasing out the semantic coincidence between Jacques Derrida’s temporalizing and spatializing and Frederick Taylor’s temporal and spatial segmentation for more than its fortuitous linguistic similarity. The scientific organization of leisure-time, work-time, leisurespace, and work-space, can, in other words, be read through différance. Through the making-present and making-absent of spatial signifiers and concepts via design techniques, the Taylorist dream of a highly structured leisure day has been accomplished. The ideal of leisure is made both nominally present and notably absent.
