ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a rational reconstruction of Chambers's theory. The term 'rational reconstruction' is used to convey the intention to provide a philosophical theory appraisal. It is appropriate that the methodological appraisal of Chambers's work be first undertaken in the context of the philosophies of science. The conventional philosophical viewpoints have been held by economists, in whom Chambers found the inspiration and motivation for many of his methodological as well as economic notions. Overall, 'conventional' philosophical analysis does not provide a completely satisfactory framework for the description and appraisal of the development of Chambers's theory. In the analysis of the development of Chambers's theory the 'friends of discovery' have provided any new insights. There are three types of approaches: logical, psychological and sociological analysis. Nevertheless, several case studies have been undertaken which provide a clear case for the epistemological significance to scientific discovery.
