ABSTRACT

The selection of a remoter rural study area took account of the belts of extreme rurality exhibited in Chapter 1. Suitable size-limits for a study area, and the extent to which policies in other counties have been subject to previous study led to the choice of Devon (figure 5.1), which displays the highest aggregate index score for a county planned by a definitive key settlement policy and which encompasses a variety of terrain which makes it representative of many rural situations in Britain.
