ABSTRACT

Social sciences research is a social activity in which we are interested in learning more about the relationships people have with each other, to events in society and social situations, and to the institutions that govern their lives. Early childhood research at this time was heavily influenced by the doctrine of developmentalism. The focus of research was on children's development rather than being directed toward learning and/or curriculum. Early decades of research relevant to early childhood were marked by a mission to understand and nurture children's development. As a result of these research efforts, programmatic interventions for children living in poverty sprang up, framed around the vision during these times that the children were culturally deprived. Throughout the history of early childhood research, researchers have pursued studies that draw upon quantitative methods, and this has been the dominant form of published research in many research journals.
