ABSTRACT

The Common Core standards have validated what librarians have always purported to be the key to success in college and beyond: those students have to be able to research a topic and present their findings. Training in self-regulatory learning can have a significant impact on how successful students are in developing the necessary skills to meet the demands of the Common Core standards at this level of learning. Self-monitoring while organizing one's search for sources can help students gain a better comprehension of the importance of motivation, strategies that work, and the availability of resources, all of which can lead to a successful foundation for any research paper. Self-monitoring provides students with a method for tracking thoughts and behaviors while working towards reaching one's goals. It also provides them with a tool for evaluating oneself after the task has been completed.
