ABSTRACT

The Common Core standards require writing at the middle school stage of academic development to be fully integrated with reading across different content areas with a range of writing applications to specific subjects and also it requires writing routinely over an extended time frame to ensure students will be able to research a topic thoroughly, to reflect on feedback or self-evaluations, and to devote their efforts to revise written work until the standard is met. This is not only a challenge for students, but also for the teachers who are asked to teach them these skills. Self-regulated students are inclined to seek out and use resources to help them attain their goals. The Common Core emphasizes strategic reading and writing, requiring students to acquire knowledge of both the conventions and craft of good writing. Self-evaluation requires ongoing observations and assessments of student's thoughts, feelings, and actions as they pursue goals.
