ABSTRACT

The availability of more information can only help performance and investment analysis. Fortunately, information technology (IT) designed specifically for application to transportation, referred to as Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), are continually improving. Many are already mature, and their benefits have been established for some, but not all, potential applications. As a common example, Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) systems based on Global Positioning System (GPS) technology is a practical feature fast becoming “core functionality” at transit operations across the globe. This technology, in turn, supports improved operational control, enhances the information available to keep passengers informed, and provides valuable data for management oversight and planning. ITS inform operational performance and investment analysis with a higher quality and quantity of data than has historically been available.
