ABSTRACT

The Ottoman Empire had its own way of interpreting economic issues, and this work has attempted to explicate this specific interpretation. With discussions concerning legitimization of the authority of rulers providing the background, three main concepts were concentrated upon: the circle of justice, household economy and humorism. The importance of the concepts of circle of justice and household economy was shown in existing academic literature; in addition to Plessner’s dissertation, which concentrates on household economy, works about Ottoman economic history contain passages in which these concepts are emphasized. In the course of my research, it became evident that the third concept, humorism, actually complemented the circle of justice and household economy concepts in many ways.
