ABSTRACT

Managing people is one of the most important parts of a manager's role. It can also seem the most challenging, especially for those new to line management, and of course it can also be very rewarding. People are often the most important resource in an organisation and their front-line manager can make an important difference to the way they feel about their work and the way they perform at work. In this book we will argue that it is the quality of the leadership and management provided by front-line managers which most influences the way employees feel about their organisation and their willingness to work hard to achieve its objectives – so it is a role which is critical to the organisation's success.
