ABSTRACT

Managing the performance of staff is one of the most important functions of a front-line manager. The front-line manager is the person that most staff identify as the immediate face of the organisation and therefore its policies and attitudes. From the wider perspective, the company depends on its front-line managers to achieve the desired performance from the workforce through engagement, involvement and the use of soft skills. Managing performance is an ongoing activity, which provides direction, monitors and measures performance and takes any necessary action, and this is true at all levels in the organisation; indeed, in a real sense, it is what the organisation is all about.
